The Philosophy Documentary is a short film about Philosophy and its relevance in the world we live in Currently.

The Documentary opens with a range of experts in the field of Philosophy talking about what they define as Philosophy and what inspired them to commence their journey into the subject.

The types of academics featured are University heads of departments, Lecturers and PhD students. The presenter of the documentary and Producer/Director Matt Bolin ask’s a range of questions about which specific part of Philosophy interests them the most, but most importantly why they feel it is not only still vital in Universities for students and the world we live in. The reasoning comes from all kinds of angles Politics, Environment, human development, reflection and in business.

The Philosophers are asked to name their favorite philosopher in history. The answers are always polarizing.  Each Academic talk about some of their thoughts on Eastern Philosophy and Western Philosophy and in simple terms what makes them different from each other.  A general consensus amongst each person interviewed is both are needed for comparison of one another.

Finally, towards the end of the short documentary each Philosopher is asked whether they believe it gives you enlightenment and why a person looking for a course to study in college/university should enroll in Philosophy and what are the possibilities for you as a result of doing so. To everybody within the film who has spent a significant period of time studying the topic it is something which all of them are passionate enough to lend their time to discuss why Philosophy can’t afford to disappear in the 21st century.

Short Synopsis

Shot over a 5 year period, 'The Bears on Pine Ridge' gives viewers unprecedented access into a declared “State of Emergency” on The Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, when youth suicides tragically reach the highest levels in the country. The Oglala Sioux Tribe’s suicide prevention team is a small unit, working around the clock to manage the crisis. Team leader, “Tiny” DeCory, a highly respected female and outspoken Lakota elder, sacrifices her own health to answer the many needs on the reservation. In an effort to empower young suicide-survivors, she creates a youth performance group called The Bear Program. This dynamic group of young survivors, most who still struggle with depression and self-harm, band together as a truly inspirational collective. Dressed in big colorful animal costumes, most tattered with rips and tears, dancing energetically to loud pop music and performing comedic sketches for the community. Afterward, the “Bears” remove their outfits and open up, speaking courageously to young audiences about their own personal struggles growing up on the reservation.
