Key Cast
Prompted by the death of a close friend during a Covid lockdown, I wrote the initial monologue as a result of feeling low, anxious, and lost in a world that had changed so much so quickly. Shot on an iPhone in the fields surrounding the village I was brought up in, this is a very personal film but one I think can have a very public engagement. I hope that the universal themes resonate far and wide to offer a moment hope and respite in a time where there appears little of either.

Due to the global pandemic, the courts have been transferred to work remotely in Russia. The film tells a story of one court hearing that takes place via Zoom. The main character, a young man (Buttov), is tried on a ridiculous charge for participation in an online rally. The court hearing is supposed to be strict, but it turns out to be funny. Home work prevents participants from remaining focused and independent. In addition, the defendant's attorney’s microphone isn’t working. So, the defendant has to defend himself. But is it possible to justify yourself before such a court? As it turns out that the attorney is the judge's husband, and he was hired by her on the condition that he'd remain quiet throughout the trial. However, the attorney declares that the whole trial is a farce. In the finale, we learn what binds the main characters and what sentence will be handed down. This absurd and Kafkaesque story was not accidentally called "The Process".

FILM TITLE: When Winter Comes (Official Music Video)
PRODUCTION YEAR: 2020
GENRE: Animation
PREMIERE STATUS: NY
RUNTIME: 04:41
COUNTRY: UK
DIRECTOR: Geoff Dunbar
CINEMATOGRAPHY BY: N/A
PRODUCER/S: Ben Chappell
SYNOPSIS:
The film adopts a painterly style glimpsing a family readying their farm for winter and highlights the themes of nature, family and home in the song. To create the short, animated film, Paul enlisted the help of Rupert and the Frog Song director Geoff Dunbar for a unique hybrid of hand and digitally drawn animation.
Paul McCartney explained, the great thing for me about this album is that I didn’t know I was actually making an album and it all started with this track really. The music I was working on was for a short animation film about the song ‘When Winter Comes’. I made a record called ‘Calico Skies’ a while ago that George Martin recorded, and at the same time because I was in the studio, I just thought oh wait a minute there’s this other song I’ve just written, so I did ‘When Winter Comes’! This song is kind of an idealistic thing, a hippy existence on a farm, planting trees, mending fences and living the good life which is something I like. I love nature and I love that idea of getting down and getting your hands dirty.
